About the Film

Life Lessons from Ah-Ma and Ah-Gong is a documentary feature film about a group of first-generation Taiwanese American immigrants sharing their stories, skills, and wisdom with their grandchildren and the next generation.

From cooking and gardening to history and Taiwanese etiquette, the subjects of these lessons will unlock personal histories and deep memories, providing an intimate lens into the early years of a diverse Taiwanese American community pushed and pulled by geo-political forces, informed by mid-century Taiwanese upbringings, and reinvented to carve new paths as American immigrants.

Join us on our journey as we explore the nostalgic, complex, and unanticipated stories from Ah-Ma and Ah-Gong.

Our Mission

Life Lessons from Ah-Ma and Ah-Gong will serve as a resource for current and future generations of Taiwanese Americans and people from all communities to better understand the Taiwanese American community and identity, as well as the broader immigration experience. We also hope this documentary will inspire greater intergenerational dialogue.

In a moment when Taiwan-China tensions are front and center, this documentary will reveal the effects of this complex geopolitical situation on individual lives.

In addition, with the aging population of first-generation Taiwanese Americans, time is running out to capture their rich stories. We must take this limited opportunity to share and honor their legacies.
